The Mortgage Credit Directive

The Directive 2014/17/EU of 4 february 2014 on Credit Agreements for Consumers Relating to Residential Immovable Property  (the “Mortgage Credit Directive”) contains a particular requirement concerning agreements covering credit for consumers secured by a mortgage or otherwise relating to residential immovable property: the obligation to carry out a creditworthiness assessment before granting a credit.

Member States shall ensure that internal and external appraisers conducting property valuations are professionally competent and sufficiently independent from the credit underwriting process in order to provide an impartial and objective valuation.
